Stop Sabotaging Your Happiness In 3 Steps

If you are the type of person that can never seem to obtain happiness in your life, you may be sabotaging yourself and not even realize it. In fact, this is something that many people do. According to Psychology Today, “behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals”.  So what can you do to stop sabotaging your happiness?

We all have that inner voice that tells us we are doing the wrong thing or that we are not good enough for doing what we want to do or what makes us happy. The biggest issue is when we start listening to this voice. We allow ourselves to be overcome with depression and anxiety and negative thinking. This is not a good place to be, yet it’s a place that many of us find ourselves far too often.

The truth is this is the place that we find only when we allow ourselves to go there. We allow the depression, anxiety and inner critic to take shape and dominate our lives. We sabotage our own happiness. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Here are three simple steps to take to stop sabotaging your happiness today.

Step 1 – Do not allow your mind to dwell in a  negative space. Of course, this takes a little self-work in order to achieve. However, it is the first step. We create our own destiny. Our thoughts do take place in the physical realm. So we must prevent ourselves from thinking negatively and instead retrain our brains to live in a positive place. How Is this obtained? It is obtained by not dwelling on the past. It is obtained by not fretting about what’s to come and by letting go of the unhappiness and pain. You obtain it by accepting yourself for who you are and turning off the inner critic, which thrives in the negative space we create in our minds.

Step 2 – Stop associating happiness with worldly possessions. Happiness does not come from money, does not come from worldly possessions or comfort. Happiness comes from a place Of positive thinking and the world we create for ourselves as a result. The possessions and the money and the comfort when it comes to us as a result of a happy place can certainly add positivity to our lives. We sabotage ourselves when we think we must have these things in order to be happy. It’s backward thinking. We think because we don’t have these things we can’t be happy and we prevent ourselves from being happy as a result. The truth is these things, the possessions, the money, can only be enjoyed truly when we have already reached a happy state of mind. Otherwise, they carry no meaning and no spiritual value or substance.

Step 3 – Do not allow yourself to experience envy – you might not realize this but when you envy what other people have instead of being thankful for what you have, you are sabotaging your happiness. You are creating an ideal that can never be reached. You think you won’t be happy until you are a certain way or you have something that somebody else has that you feel that you need to be happy. It is that thinking that sabotages your own happiness. Why? Because we put happiness in a place that is unobtainable.

If you follow these steps you will be well on your way to a place where you can allow yourself to be happy, where you will stop sabotaging your happiness. When you realize that many things go wrong in your life because of your own choices and because you allow them to, you will become free from self-sabotage. Good luck on your journey to a better self.
