WAKE UP! Don’t Let Time Pass You By

There’s a Bruce Lee quote that says:

“If you love life, don’t  waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”

Here’s a question to ponder for a moment– how important to you is your life? How about the love in your life or relationship with loved ones? Pretty important, right?

Here’s another question. How many times in the last week have you found yourself hanging out with your loved ones while on a personal electronic device? Whatever your answer is, times that by 10 because most likely this happens a lot more often than you realize.

Personal electronics are so common now that we don’t even notice they’re there. Our realities have gotten a lot larger and we have started to take in an entirely new space that didn’t exist before.

If you really want to do something special for your significant other, leave your phone at home when you go on that date. Take the time to enjoy your life together. Talk to each other, laugh, enjoy each other’s company without Google or Facebook running in the background. Being “in” the moment is one of the most romantic things a couple can do.

Shared experiences have become more common in social media than in every-day life. We have information at our fingertips all the time. That means for every thought that runs through our head we have the option to pick up our phone and do a Google search on that topic. Whereby this is a great thing, it can also be a challenge when maintaining healthy happy relationships. If you are not careful, this could create huge intimacy gaps, especially for romantic couples.

Think about this the next time you are on your electronic device, “are you missing out on your life?” Are you turning to Google to share your most intimate thoughts instead of your life partner? Do you see how this could cause trouble in paradise after a while? Just because we have the power, doesn’t mean we should use it. That’s a hard lesson to swallow.

On the other hand, what do you do if your significant other and loved ones don’t share your sentiment? Does that justify you to go grab your device and join in? The answer is no.

As hard as it is to admit sometimes, we cannot control the feelings or the behavior of our loved ones. We can only control our own. You owe it to yourself to stay in the moment and enjoy your life. If you need to stay busy, grab a pen and paper or do something else, but stay in the moment.  Stay present. Allow yourself to embrace the best gift of all: time. Time passes far too fast and we only have so much of it. Don’t leave the water running, savor every drop. In the end, not only will your relationships thank you, but you’ll be a better person for it too.

Good luck in your journey as you open your heart space.
