How to Know When It’s Time to Make a Significant Change

Is it time to make a significant change in your life? There are moments in every life when people, even the most moral of people, look upon their character and do not like or respect what they see. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Striving to be better than you are is a very good quality that allows us to grow as individuals.  When we can see that there is something we don’t like in our life or about ourselves, we know it is time to make a significant change.

In a crazy world full of inconsistencies, there is one constant that can ironically be relied upon and that is: change. Hence the saying, “change is the one constant in life”. The point is, there is nothing wrong with change and in fact, change is a  necessary physically, spiritually, and psychologically speaking.

There are signals, road signs if you will, that point us in the right direction. Likewise, the same signals alert us when we are traveling in the wrong direction. What do these signs look like? For the most part, they are personal and where we can’t list them all in one article, there are a few signs to look for.

Signs to look for when a change is needed:

1. You no longer take pleasure in the things that used to make you happy.

When you stop taking pleasure in the things that used to make you happy, that is a good indicator that you have changed. If these are hobbies, it’s not a big deal. You can always find new hobbies that make you happy; however, if this is family or events then that makes things a bit more complicated.

If your relationship, for example, used to make you happy but no longer does, you must ask yourself this one question: what has changed? If the answer is you, then know that’s okay. Everyone changes. Perhaps it’s time to include your spouse into those changes by getting to know each other again. Have you fallen out of love? What will make you happy? Perhaps,  it’s time to move on to the next stage in your relationship.

It is also important to recognize that if there is one part of your life that is making you feel unhappy, often times that one thing, whatever it may be, can and often does poison the other areas of your life.  If you are unhappy at work and have trouble leaving those things at the door when you get home, those emotions can easily translate into your home life. Identifying the source and attacking the problem is key here.

2. You are trapped in mind loops.

The all too familiar mind loops. Do you know those times when you can’t seem to think through a situation? You think you know what you want, but you can’t get there because you have too many thoughts holding you back? You say “I want to do this, but I can’t.” You say this over and over again until it drives you crazy. Mind loops or circular thinking might be a sign that you have taken the wrong direction in life, or that you are ready to make a big change. They are a normal part of spiritual growth and most definitely signs that should be paid attention to.

3. You feel sad and confused a lot of the time.

This is something that happens after a long period of time experiencing mind loops, but doing nothing about them. This process can be quite painful and many of us may seek out substances, such as nicotine or alcohol, to help us cope or possibly escape these emotions. Although, these things may provide relief in the short term, ultimately it will cause confusion passivity or lack of motivation to change.

Many of these signs may appear to be chronic depression, but that is not always the case. In fact, instead of trying to treat the symptom—depression—perhaps it is more effective to go to the source. The emotions you are feeling could simply be your inner self, trying to tell you it’s time to make a significant change. Remember, only you have the power to change your life.
